Politically Correct Textbooks

Duane Hughes

Among the most valuable heritages from one generation to the next is the account of what others who have gone before have experienced and written as a record of those events. A famous quote says, “He who does not learn from history is doomed to repeat it.” Few quotes hold more truth. The aforementioned quote warns of the consequences of not learning from history, but what are the consequences of re-writing it?

In today’s program we heard about the national textbook changes that are being introduced to our schools in the name of “political correctness.” Among those changes is the elimination of the term “founding fathers” so as not to be sexist. What? … Those who wrote the documents that are the foundation of this republic and govern our country were of the male gender. It would be ridiculous, therefore, to refer to them as “founding mothers” or even the political correct term as “founding persons.” Have we become so obsessed with societal sensitivity that we are willing to sacrifice the facts of our history at the altar of political correctness? What are they thinking?

If those who are willing to re-write history believe that there has been much progress in the gender battle, why are they not willing to leave history alone and let it speak for itself rather than manipulate it.

If we are to accept the practice of re-writing history for the sake of the political climate of the time, we run the risk of not only failing to learn from history, but of engineering the future by those who hold the keys to history textbooks today, and that’s OUTRAGEOUS!

Ethics in Journalism

Duane Hughes

Today’s program highlighted the obvious disconnect between what we see and hear in today’s media regarding the Palestinian/Israeli conflict and the historical events which expose the true basis for the bloodshed and terror that has plagued Israel for decades.

Someone once said “Don’t believe everything you read and only half of what you see,” or words to that effect. Such a statement clearly comes from experience. Yet we in America have come to rely on what we read and see from traditional media sources. After all, the ethics of journalism and accurate reporting are the standards of the media giants. Or are they?

Recently, it was discovered that CNN had first hand knowledge of unspeakable brutality to visitors to Iraq, knowledge of life-threatening danger facing those who came to Baghdad. Yet for the sake of position in the media marketplace, remained silent. At what cost? Who knows.

Additionally, the New York Times, an icon in American journalism, allowed lies to be printed as if they were fact…kept a “reporter” on the payroll because he was African-American, while knowingly printing his fabricated stories, all for the sake of an ideology of racial quotas and image.

There are boundaries that should never be crossed. Violating ethics and integrity in journalism is one of them. We look to the media for information and deserve to be able to rely on its accuracy. Misinformation can have tragic consequences. A journalist willing to misrepresent and distort the facts for personal or corporate gain is no better than the police officer to whom we trust our laws and safety but turns his back on crime for the gain of a bribe. And that’s OUTRAGEOUS.

Human Rights

Duane Hughes

The issue of human rights, without a doubt, has been used, abused and manipulated for political purposes like few other issues. Not to be misunderstood, there are those who champion the cause of human rights with nothing but the purest of humanitarian motives. It’s those who exploit the emotion that accompany this subject that are the culprits.

As we heard on today’s program, there are terrible abuses of what amounts to slave labor and unbelievable treatment of people in China. Unfortunately, China is only one example of such treatment. Indeed there are abuses and atrocities perpetrated on humanity all over the world. And to those who are on the front line fighting for those victims, we applaud them and pray for God’s favor on their efforts.

Another tragedy, one that rivals the physical abuses of people, is that of exploiting those abuses into political posturing and gain. Take the United Nations. Here is an international organization that espouses the mantra of human rights, yet either turns its head or flat out ignores the mistreatment of suffering humans in many situation across the globe. The fact the UN has an official Commission on Human Rights is evidently another political window dressing to justify its existence.

To add insult to injury, the UN appointed Libya to head the Commission On Human Rights...Libya...a dictatorship country with a track record of human rights violations that rivals that of Saddam Hussein, as well as terrorist links, including being responsible for the blowing up of Pan AM’s flight 103 over Lockerby Scotland. To put Libya at the Head of the Commission on Human Rights is like putting an arsonist on the committee in charge of gasoline and matches... and that’s OUTRAGEOUS!

Human Dignity

Duane Hughes

Today’s program made mention of the unbelievable comparison of the Holocaust of the Jews to the killing of animals as food for humans. The website that hosted the comparison had pictures of both pigs and turkeys in captivity comparing them to pictures of the emaciated Jewish prisoners in the concentrations camps of Nazi Germany.

This comparison is absurd and off the wall for two reasons. First of all, to compare imprisoned victims of racial prejudice and hatred whose plight was perpetrated by the greed and power of one of history’s most vile dictators to the natural harvesting of a food source is, to say the least, ridiculous.

Second, and as was mentioned in the program, this is not just about “animal rights” this is about being anti-people.

To make my point, when have you ever seen any “so-called” animal rights group. or activist for that matter, launch a campaign against crocodiles in Africa for the wholesale slaughter of wildebeests as they cross rivers, or for cheetahs running down and devouring a baby gazelle.

Now you might say these are animals that only eat meat…okay, what about the bears and other omnivores that can eat both vegetation and meat? Where is the outrage about their eating anything they can catch? Where is the outrage about house cats eating cute, innocent little mice and fledgling birds? Shouldn’t they be targeted as well?

Where in the “evolutionary journey” do these animal rights activists think things went awry? The food chain is a law of nature and should be recognized as such.

Being a good steward of our environment and resources is the responsible thing to do, but to make such a comparison to the Holocaust is not only irresponsible and ludicrous, it’s OUTRAGEOUS.

Human Engineering

Duane Hughes

On the subject of the value of Human Life, it is interesting that without the restraint of a moral compass, the human intellect will achieve not what it should but whatever it can. The concerns addressed on today's program about bioethics and genetic engineering are but the tip of the iceberg should the scientific community be allowed to achieve what it can rather than what it should.

Take the subject of inter-stellar space travel. I recently watched a program on an educational channel where they were trying to solve the dilemma of how long it will take, even at the speed of light, to travel to another solar system. Because a human cannot live long enough to make the trip and still be young enough to be of value to the mission when they arrive, genetic engineering is being considered. Not to extend human life, but to alter it.

Cryogenic freezing is a possible solution, but you need other humans to attend the equipment during the flight. Because weightlessness will be the environment for the life of the attending humans, according to the narrator of the program, they will have no need for legs or feet. Instead they can be genetically mutated to grow two extra arms and hands, which would be much more useful during the trip.

What then is our destiny as humans if left to ourselves and unchecked by moral restraint? If we are subject to being designed by man rather than God, then our destiny would be left to whatever man would desire.

That is not only OUTRAGEOUS...it's TERRIFYING!
