Property Rights
Duane Hughes

America means a lot of things to a lot of people. But one thing that is a common thread of the great American opportunity is to own you own home and, even better for some, to own a plot of land. For most of the world this is what dreams are made of, but as we have heard on today’s program, so are nightmares.

The U.S. Constitution is very clear that our property, both personal and real, is sacred and cannot be searched or ceased without a duly justified warrant. But now, the liberties guaranteed to us by the Constitution are being systematically eliminated by regulations, cloaked in the emotions of environmental need and sound-good legislation that take control of our property with us still having ownership and… responsibility.

Take the American Rivers Heritage Act. Passed by Congress, any state government could have a river in their state become part of the Act to preserve the river as part of American heritage. Sounds great, but what’s really behind this act? Property control? You decide. If a river becomes a heritage river every tributary falls under the jurisdiction of the Act and a buffer on each side of the river is restricted so that even cattle ranchers, whose ranch may have been in their family for generations, must discontinue cattle ranching for fear the cattle may pollute the river.

According to Webster’s dictionary, a definition of fascism is “the retention of private ownership of production under central governmental control.” In other words, you own it, assume liability for it, pay taxes on it and the government will tell you what you can do with it. And that’s OUTRAGEOUS!

Media Prejudice
Duane Hughes

Today’s program highlighted the obvious disconnect between what we see and here in today’s media regarding the Palestinian/Israeli conflict, and the historical events which undermine the basis for the bloodshed and terror that has plagued Israel for decades.

Someone once said “don’t believe everything you read and only half of what you see” or words to that effect. Such a statement clearly comes from experience. Yet we in America have come to rely on what we read and see from traditional media sources. After all, the ethics of journalism and accurate reporting are the standards of the media giants. Or are they?

During the military operations in Iraq, it was discovered that CNN had firsthand knowledge of unspeakable brutality to visitors to Iraq, knowledge of life-threatening danger facing those who came to Baghdad…and yet for the sake of position in the media marketplace, remained silent. At what cost? Who knows?

Additionally, the New York Times, an icon in American journalism, allowed lies to be printed as if they were fact…kept a “reporter” on the payroll because he was African-American, while knowingly printing his fabricated stories, all for the sake of image and an ideology of racial quotas.

There are boundaries that should never be crossed. Violating ethics and integrity in journalism is one of them. We look to the media for information and deserve to be able to rely on its accuracy. Misinformation can have tragic consequences. A journalist willing to misrepresent and distort the facts for personal or corporate gain is no better than the police officer, to whom we trust our safety and the enforcement of our laws, who turns his back on crime for the gain of a bribe. And that’s OUTRAGEOUS.
