OUTRAGEOUS 6Click here for an index of all OUTRAGEOUS Segments Illegal Immigration Few Americans would disagree that America is the greatest country in the world. As well, many if not most of the world, would like to have a shot at the American dream. Of course from our perspective, we would like to take the American dream to the rest of the non-free world, but that’s another subject. Today’s topic is illegal immigration. Now I imagine that there are some who think ill of me because I didn’t say undocumented immigrant. To them I say that any reasonably thinking person would agree that using another word to describe illegal doesn’t change what it is… any more than describing a bank robbery as a financial transaction would! Illegal immigrants are benefiting from America’s generosity; which some might call stupidity because of a phenomenon in politics called, sell your principles and integrity at the altar of politics for the possibility of future votes to keep you in POWER! Unfortunately, the media plays a major part in winning this battle and it’s the illegals who continue to receive the spoils. Now, before you call me mean, keep in mind that I welcome those who can come to America, legally, to be part of this great country. But consider this. Allowing illegals to remain in America and provide them benefits would be like allowing a burglar that broke into your home… to stay and you provide him food, shelter and health insurance. It is estimated that nearly half of the multi-billion dollar shortfall in California’s state budget is the result of costs associated with illegal aliens. And even though we’ve seen the warning signs we continue on with a Titanic mentality. In spite of all the alarms, we keep going full speed ahead with the band playing and the dance floor full. Remember, the vast majority of passengers on the Titanic “knew” that it was an unsinkable ship…and that’s not only tragic, it’s also OUTRAGEOUS! Energy Crisis For decades we have been hearing about an energy crisis that is either upon us or is immanent. Like anything else that we hear often enough, we start to become callous to it, it ends up falling into of one of those “yeah, yeah…I’ve heard it before” categories, and becomes another boy crying wolf one time too many. However, in this case, there really is a wolf. If you were to talk to most geologists in the oil business, they would tell you that there are vast deposits of oil either in or around the United States. Whether in Alaska or in the Gulf of Mexico, there are billions of barrels of oil that can be accessed, if we were to make the effort. Another energy resource that is abundant in the U.S. is coal, and while the perception is that coal is a dirty source of energy, technology has advanced to the point that we can burn coal without polluting the air. If we, therefore, have so much energy reserve, then why the crisis? Let’s compare our energy situation to taking a scuba dive in the ocean. The success of the dive very much depends on how well you conserve or manage your air. If you swim hard and take deep breaths, you use up your air rapidly and before you know it you will be forced to the surface, likely in a panic. But if you are careful to monitor your activity and only use what you need, the dive can last up to twice as long. Interestingly enough, there is plenty of air at the surface… whether you’re in a panic or not. All too often we find ourselves in a crisis because of political reasons - environmental, economical or social. We don’t want to drill because if will hurt the environment. We don’t want to have power lines in our community because they’re ugly. We don’t want to build more refineries because they pose a threat to the community. While you can empathize with some of these concerns, the reality is if we don’t properly access and manage our supply we will have a wolf to deal with. It’s kind of like running out of air just below the boat…and that’s OUTRAGEOUS! Corrupt Leaders We read in the Bible that the heart of man is desperately wicked. Now that’s a statement! As a matter of fact, in today’s anything-is-okay society, you can spark quite a vigorous debate by either quoting that scripture or putting forth that notion. Just say that people are inherently evil and watch the fireworks. Well, in spite of the fireworks, one only needs to look at history to see that there is truth to that scripture verse. Take Africa; a country that has been colonized, conquered, exploited, manipulated, and plundered. Her people sold into slavery from without, and from within, sold into poverty by corrupt leaders that live lavish lifestyles, while the people they rule barely survive…and to often they don’t. It is heartbreaking. I had the privilege to go to Douala, Cameroon in Africa in 1999 and was there for four weeks. During my stay, I was appalled at the poor conditions of the city and lack of sanitation, garbage piled ten feet high in the middle of a huge round-about intersection. When I inquired as to why things were is such disarray, I was told the money that would normally go to cleaning up the city was lining the pockets of literally every level of governmental official from the cop on the street, to the mayor, and beyond. If America, or any other nation, is going to provide aid, financial
or otherwise, to Africa or any other country, it is our duty to
hold the leaders of those countries accountable in order to insure
that its people receive the benefit of that aid. History has proven
that without restraint, the heart of man will show its true colors.
