Mary Lindell

Mary Lindell
Heroine: a woman having the qualities of a hero; a woman admired and emulated for her achievements and qualities; the central female figure in an event or period.
During the war she parachuted into France and established the "Marie-Claire" escape line for Allied troops out of Nazi occupied France, smuggling British airman into Spain. She was once caught by the Nazis and imprisoned in solitary confinement for a shorter sentence than usual because of her record of aiding German soldiers as a nurse on the battlefield.
Once released from prison she continued her heroic underground operation to aide allied forces escape.
Her marriage to Count de Melville ended, leaving her a single mom of two teenaged children during this time. Her son Maurice Lindell joined her in the Resistance, while her daughter got involved with a German soldier.
Unfortunately little is available either online or in print encyclopedias about her life, or pictures, but Hallmark made a movie about her entitled One Against the Wind, with a powerful performance by Judy Davis in the role of Mary Lindell, the true story of a British nurse who won the Iron Cross twice for bravery. The movie is based on the book, "No Drums...no Trumpets" by Barry Wynne.
A great movie for summer viewing.
For her heroic courage, determination and dedication to the cause of saving the lives of British troops from the horrific hand of Hitler's regime Mary Lindell is this month's WOMANTalk Heroine of the Month.
