Your World - Women of Compassion
'Baby bin'
A Door of Hope

We have a lot of listeners in Africa who listen online to the show, and despite some of the desperate situations in that continent with AIDS, tribal wars, corrupt leaders there are also many good things happening there. Such as the hundreds of abandoned babies who are not left to die because they are dropped in a 'baby bin' …a Door of Hope hole in the wall of a church.

The Berea Baptist Mission Church in downtown Johannesburg, South Africa, has been open since 1999 to newborns 24 hours a day. In the Johannesburg area alone 40-50 babies are abandoned every month and would die of starvation or exposure if not dropped in the ‘baby bin.”

But not all the babies come through the Door of Hope hole in the wall. Sometimes police bring them, desperate mothers hand over their babies personally, or hospitals phone to ask the mission to pick up little ones whose mothers have disappeared after the delivery.

The situation there is very rough in Johannesburg known for its crime, poverty and AIDS problems. Cherrie-Anne Rye, of Auckland, New Zealand working at the Door of Hope has to live behind “rape gates” and barred windows, and says, “People here live in fear. When we drive we know we are taking a risk and much of our time is spent following the best ways to keep ourselves safe."

What self-sacrifice on the part of the women of compassion who work at the Door of Hope. What GOOD NEWS for this next generation in Africa.

Would that there were hundreds of ‘baby bins’ in every state of our nation.
