Anthony Dearest

A medieval Portuguese friar, St. Anthony of Padua is considered by many to be profoundly relevant to our modern, daily lives. Known as the “Hammer of Heretics,” this patron saint of lost and stolen articles allegedly works miracles even today. And we can all use a miracle or two, right?

That said beginning March 9th, the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement will honor Anthony with a special Novena of masses. To get my personal prayer requests answered, I need only write them on a reply slip—and send a generous offering along with it. By doing so, I support services of the Graymoor Ecumenical and Interreligious Institute that promotes unity and understanding among people of all faiths. Unfortunately, such efforts beg the question, “How can two walk together except they be agreed?” For all practical purposes, they cannot.

Speaking of which, while I respect honest theological differences, the literature I received by mail (complete with a complimentary St. Anthony medal) is worthy of comment. In a form letter, Father Robert Warren promises the intercession of a man who has been dead for hundreds of years (700 to be exact). Whatever I ask of this saint, he will obtain. Anthony purportedly delivers what the Comforter of Scriptures cannot or will not.

Problem is Mosaic law strictly forbids conversing with the dead, simple as that. Necromancy is a form of witchcraft, one of the “black” or diabolical arts. It’s by no means a biblical practice; moreover light has no legitimate fellowship with darkness—no matter how piously it’s peddled.

Nonetheless, on a pictorial insert, I’m provided words of a prayer addressed to Anthony. Through that prayer, I’m assured of his (lower-case “h”) reaching down from heaven. It is he, I’m told, who pleads for me and he who stands ever ready to speak on my behalf. Because of him, I am not alone.

Sadly, Franciscan Friars bypass the Bible. There is but one mediator between God and man—that being, the man Christ Jesus; no patron saint needed. When we call upon the LORD, He answers. Indeed, it is Jesus Christ, not St. Anthony, who “ever liveth to make intercession.” He is near to all who call upon Him in truth. Therefore, as believers, we make our requests known of God. Our job is to seek His face, pray according to His expressed Word—always in faith believing; always in the Name of Jesus. The LORD stands alone as our merciful and faithful great High Priest. His favor cannot be purchased, and no name other than Jesus wields power in the heavenlies—or on earth. That we can count on.
