Susan B. Anthony

Susan was involved in the temperance movement and then in1854 devoted herself to the antislavery movement up to the civil war in 1861. Then in 1872 she began working so that women would be given the same civil and political rights that had been extended to black males under the 14th and 15th amendments, and led a group of women to the polls in Rochester, NY to vote. She was arrested and while waiting for her trial, tried to vote again. She was tried and convicted of violating the voting laws, but she refused to pay the fine. That marked the beginning of an endless campaign of lecturing for a federal women suffrage amendment. She traveled thousands of miles throughout the United States and Europe, giving 75 to 100 speeches per year for over 45 years.
Working to see the passage of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments, Susan B. Anthony saw women admitted to the University of Rochester but it wasn’t until 14 years after her death that women won the right to vote. She is the first American woman to have her face on a U.S. dollar coin.
For her labor to see American slaves set free, and for women to gain the right to vote Susan B. Anthony is our Heroine of the Month.
Quotes by Susan B. Anthony
“There never will be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect lawmakers.”
“
"No matter what the motive, love of ease, or a desire to save from suffering the unborn innocent, the woman is awfully guilty who commits the deed. It will burden her conscience in life, it will burden her soul in death; but oh! Thrice guilty is he who drove her to the desperation which impels her to the crime."

"It is great that America has been able to help so many other nations. It has been able to do so because it was first taking care of its own families and citizens. Now, in a time where we are facing an economic crisis, it is time to once again look at investing in America, so it can continue to help others as well. Thank you Sharon for showing ways Americans can support America during its time of weakness." -Scott Brown
