Elementary children in Japan went to school this week to find a robot in their classroom ready to give classes. As the students were touching her cheeks, they were surprised to discover that she was not like most robots, as she could display different kinds of emotions.
The robot, name Saya, can display six different kinds of emotions; surprise, fear, disgust, anger, happiness and sadness. She is very unique, doesn’t look half bad either, and is remote-controlled.
They say kids never forget their first grade teacher and I am sure these kids will never forget this robot that was there to teach their class for the day. This robot teacher can speak various languages as well as take roll. She can assign basic tasks to students and express her ‘mood’ with facial expressions which are powered by 18 different motors.
Will this be the wave of the future? Will they be able to use this as a cheaper alternative to substitute teaching when necessary?
It will be interesting to see how far this will get and if it will become a wave of the future. For the time being, if you are a teacher, I strongly recommend you start reviewing your own teaching habits. You may just find yourself in competition with a robot!
I’d start asking your school if they have heard of robot teachers, and if it is something they see coming in their near future. What do you think: can a robotic figure truly show feelings?

"It is great that America has been able to help so many other nations. It has been able to do so because it was first taking care of its own families and citizens. Now, in a time where we are facing an economic crisis, it is time to once again look at investing in America, so it can continue to help others as well. Thank you Sharon for showing ways Americans can support America during its time of weakness." -Scott Brown
