REAL ISSUES - Special Edition
My Thoughts On The Election
By Sharon Hughes

Well, I guess my initial reactive thought, when I felt impressed earlier this year that "2008 was going to be the end of an era", meant that Obama would win, was correct.

The following verse from the bible seem to stand out to me a couple of weeks ago, and I believe is helpful in understanding elections, and questions relating to "is God in control?"

1 Samuel 8. When Israel asked for a king...
"Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will do. When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, and the LORD will not answer you in that day." But the people refused to listen to Samuel. "No!" they said. "We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles. When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the LORD. The LORD answered, "Listen to them and give them a king."

Because of what we know of Obama's positions on the issues, we can look forward with certainty to greater battles ahead for life, for traditional values, for less government control and tax burden, and the other issues that we addressed on the show for months during this campaign.

It is interesting to note that a recent FOX poll showed that of all voters, Dem, Rep and Indeps, 30% were excited about Obama's win; 21% optimistic; 20% concerned and 25% scared. This is amazing given the landslide he enjoyed in the electoral college, (but not in the popular vote: only a few points difference than McCain).

Though this marks the end of John McCain's chances of ever being president because of his age, I agree with those who say that we haven't seen the end of Sarah Palin.

So, as I wrote in my November From Sharon letter for WOMANTalk a few days ago...

As I write this just a couple of days before the election, none of us know yet who will win this election, but there is a sense that not only have we witnessed a battle between two opposing ideologies, but that the battle won't be over come January. For this election has exposed a divide in our nation that has not been obvious to most...but now is.

So, that means no matter who wins, we must continue to 'fight' for the principles and values we hold dear right where we live, because the forces that are shaping our 21st century are not just political forces, but, educational, religious, economic, media and entertainment, and spiritual forces. These 'mountains' or 'kingdoms' are the mind-molders of individuals and nations.

Therefore, we need to stay informed and stay alert for we not only live in a changing world, but have the ability to be a part of shaping our culture for goodThe fight we find ourselves engaged in for our children's and their children's future is a noble cause and one we, on our watch, need to fight to the finish!
The mountains are before us, let's take them!

Hopebulb December - Where's the Hope?

Chuck Colson was famously quoted in a Steven Curtis Chapman song as saying "Where is the hope? The hope that each of us has is not in who governs us, or what laws we pass, or what great things we do as a nation." So, where is the hope to be found?
